"DESTINY MAKER" - Excerpt
(First 12 pages)

INT. U.S. SENATOR'S OFFICE - DAY

SENATOR BILL MOON carries himself with a thoughtful poise that dignifies him beyond his forty-two years.

He sits in silhouette, quietly embroiled in paperwork.

The room is decked out with the trappings of power, including a large expensive desk, and many photos of the Senator with the President and other dignitaries.

An eager young ASSISTANT named ROY pokes his head through the doorway. He waits in respectful silence before hesitantly breaking the Senator's concentration.

ROY

Excuse me, Senator.

SENATOR

Yes, Roy?

ROY

The car just left the White House, Sir.

The Senator answers without looking up.

SENATOR

Thank you.

A bookshelf is filled with expensive oversized editions. The Senator's 10 year old SON slides a heavy tome from the bottom shelf onto the floor, with a heavy THUMP.

SENATOR (CONT'D)

[gently] Careful, Son, that's my favorite.

The boy opens the book of 19th century photographs of Native Americans.

SON

Dad, what does 'Anasazi' mean?

SENATOR

It means 'Ancient Stranger.' That tribe believed their ancestors came from the twin star Sirius.

SON

What's a twin star?

SENATOR

It's a star that has another tiny little star spinning around it.

SON

Oh, did the Indians have telescopes?

SENATOR

Native Americans, Son. No, they didn't have telescopes.

SON

Then how did they know about the tiny star?

SENATOR

That's a good question, Son.

The Senator stares at the book's photograph of a Native American elder, while the baffling implication of his son's question sinks in.

SENATOR (CONT'D)

You see, the ancients supposedly had knowledge that's . . . well, it's been lost.

SON

How did they lose it?

The Senator's gaze stays riveted on the book.

SENATOR

That's a long story, Son.

The native elder in the photograph moves. His lips widen ever so slightly into a subtle smile.

RIPPLE DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. DESERT - AMERICAN SOUTHWEST - PRE-DAWN

A NATIVE AMERICAN ELDER's leathery face broadens into a smile. He walks alone in the moonlit landscape.

SUPER: "American Southwest, 1500 AD."

The man's name is ANASAZI. His weather-worn features express strength, wisdom and humor.

A NIGHT OWL watches, transfixed, as Anasazi emits a low repetitive CALL. It's spine-tingling, like he's coaxing a dark spirit from the depths of the night.

Anasazi becomes bathed in a golden glow. It gets brighter, as a deep HUM gets louder and closer.

The owl flees with a SCREECH. Lizards and snakes wake in fright. They scurry and slither from the pool of golden light into the cover of darkness.

Anasazi looks up. A golden orb races past like a streak of light in the sky. He smiles.

ANASAZI

Now we go to work!

MAIN TITLE: "Destiny Maker."

Anasazi treks jauntily across the desert, following the streak of light toward the sunrise.

EXT. SPANISH GALLEON - PRE-DAWN

Three GALLEONS of Spanish Conquistadors sail across the high seas, lit by the full moon. The CAPTAIN stands next to the FIRST MATE, who is at the helm. The Captain checks the wind in the sails.

CAPTAIN

If this wind holds, we'll see landfall by week's end.

FIRST MATE

It's not on the map yet, but I hear this new world has a name now. It's called 'America.'

CAPTAIN

Yes, and she'll be ours for the taking!

FIRST MATE

We'll be stinking rich!

The golden orb races across the sky above them with a deep HUM. The MEN look upwards in awe, then cross themselves.

CAPTAIN

There's a sign, if there ever was one!

FIRST MATE

[worried] Aye, but from God, or the Devil?

An excited PRIEST rushes up to them.

PRIEST

Did you see it?

The men nod curtly, and turn away from him. The Captain spits. The priest crosses himself earnestly.

PRIEST (CONT'D)

We thank thee, O Lord, for this holy mission -

CAPTAIN

Just pray for gold, Priest!

EXT. FLATLANDER TRIBE'S CAMP - GRASSY PLAINS - PRE-DAWN

This is a large tribe, with teepees sprawling endlessly over the flat, moon-lit terrain. SUPER: "Flatlander Tribe."

Sleepy men and women start the day at first light, by gathering food and making fire.

A cruel looking middle-aged man named BLACK FIRE dons his head-dress of feathers and skulls. He adorns himself with jewelry made of gold, and drapes himself with the grisly trappings of a black magician.

A Flatlander WARRIOR approaches him.

WARRIOR

Shaman, today is the day you predicted -

Everyone stops in their tracks and looks up, as the golden orb races across the sky with a deep HUM.

The men's upturned faces are filled with awe. Black Fire's face is filled with evil portent.

He wraps his forearm with hide, makes a shrill call and holds his arm out. A big black HAWK lands on his arm, sinking its razor talons into the hide.

The shaman and his black predatory bird regard each other with with cold, ruthless eyes. They understand each other.

BLACK FIRE

Now we go to work!

He launches the bird into flight.

BLACK FIRE (CONT'D)

Fly swift, fly true, sweet bird of death! Fail me not, or take your last breath!

The hawk speeds off, chasing after the golden orb.

EXT. DESERT - PRE-DAWN

Anasazi makes a lonely figure as he treks across the vast desert sands. An EAGLE hovers high above him.

Anasazi gives a call, and the eagle descends, landing gently on Anasazi's arm as if it were tame.

ANASAZI

We have great things to do here, my magnificent friend!

Anasazi deftly plucks a loose feather from the eagle's tail, and tucks it into his amulet hanging around his neck. The mandala-like talisman is made of pure gold, set with turquoise surrounding a diamond center.

ANASAZI (CONT'D)

Thank you, great spirit soul.

He pushes the big bird back into flight.

ANASAZI (CONT'D)

When we next meet, my friend, you and I will shape this people's destiny!

He continues walking jauntily across the desert, silhouetted by the full moon on the horizon.

MATCH DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. CLIFF TOP - GRAND CANYON - PRE-DAWN

The full moon rises over the upper Grand Canyon. SUPER: "The Cliff People tribe."

MEN and WOMEN begin their day by making fire and gathering food on the bluff above their caves, which are the dwellings they've carved into the sheer cliff face, high above the river gorge.

The golden orb stops, and hovers directly in line with Sirius. It now appears as if Sirius has become a little bigger, and a lot brighter.

One man stops and stares upwards, noticing this change in the heavens. Then the others notice.

MAN-1

It was never that bright before!

The men lean over the edge of the cliff and call down to the caves, to beckon their chief.

MAN-2

Chief! Come look at this!

Chief White Eagle climbs up a ladder on the cliff face, and joins them.

The chief sees the new look of Sirius, and calls down to his shaman, LONE WOLF.

WHITE EAGLE

Shaman! Come here!

There is no answer.

WHITE EAGLE (CONT'D)

Lone Wolf! Come look at this!

INT. LONE WOLF'S CAVE - PRE-DAWN

Lone Wolf embraces his wife, LITTLE DEER, in their bed, as the chief's voice echoes into their cave:

WHITE EAGLE (O.S.)

Lone Wolf! What are you doing?

Lone Wolf turns his head, but Little Deer takes his head in her hands and turns it back, keeping him focused on her.

They complete their embrace.

Lone Wolf gathers his tunic and stumbles toward the cave entrance, overlooking the river gorge far below.

EXT. CLIFF TOP - GRAND CANYON - DAWN

Anasazi's eagle soars high above the camp, watching the men who are watching Sirius. They are fascinated by the star's new look.

The sun breaks the horizon. Hard sunbeams and long sharp shadows suddenly spill across the bluff.

Lone Wolf climbs up a ladder and joins the others.

WHITE EAGLE

Lone Wolf, what does a shaman make of this? Is it a sign?

LONE WOLF

Yes. It's important. But what it means -

The men all turn at once as they see Anasazi appear, as if from nowhere.

Anasazi is adorned differently to the Cliff People. He is obviously not of this tribe, nor of any other that comes to mind.

Nevertheless, he is a man of noble stature, with a strong aura of magic and mysticism. He is welcomed warmly by these friendly people, who immediately recognize that he is a shaman.

WHITE EAGLE

Welcome, shaman. Be at peace here.

ANASAZI

May peace be with you.

WHITE EAGLE

I am White Eagle, chief of the Cliff People.

ANASAZI

I know of you already, great chief. My name is Anasazi.

WHITE EAGLE

Your name means 'Ancient Stranger' in our tongue. Who are your people?

Anasazi casts his eyes upwards, at the bright star.

ANASAZI

My people are an ancient race.

The men stare at him, waiting for more.

ANASAZI (CONT'D)

Our destiny is to be men of peace.

Everyone stares at him, waiting for more.

WHITE EAGLE

From where?

ANASAZI

Far away.

Everyone waits.

ANASAZI (CONT'D)

Far, far away.

WHITE EAGLE

I see. A man of mystery. But I sense good intentions!

Anasazi pulls from his pouch a smooth black cylinder of polished obsidian.

ANASAZI

It would honor me if your shaman, Lone Wolf, would accept this small gift.

The chief beckons Lone Wolf.

WHITE EAGLE

Lone Wolf, this is Anasazi.

ANASAZI

Lone Wolf, I have heard of your power.

LONE WOLF

[wary] And I have heard something of you, Ancient Stranger. You've been among the Mountain Men.

ANASAZI

Yes.

Anasazi gives the stone to Lone Wolf.

LONE WOLF

I've seen this.

Lone Wolf takes the stone like he's familiar with it. He shakes it downwards, and the tip of the stone bursts into flames. But the stone remains cool in Lone Wolf's hand.

The men lurch back, shocked by such magic.

Lone Wolf holds his hand over the cool flame, and it goes out. The men crowd in for a closer look.

LONE WOLF (CONT'D)

My own power is from within. Where does this power come from, shaman?

Anasazi once again emits his spooky repetitive CALL, like he's coaxing a spirit from the night. Once again the scene becomes bathed in a golden glow.

The men look skyward and see the golden star shining so brightly that it's visible even now, after the sun has risen.

They all stare in silent awe, except Lone Wolf, who looks suspicious. The chief turns to Lone Wolf.

WHITE EAGLE

Shaman, is this another sign from our Great Spirit?

All eyes turn to Lone Wolf, as he thinks carefully.

LONE WOLF

The Great Spirit does the bidding of no man!

A strong MURMUR passes through the gathering.

WHITE EAGLE

What do you mean?

LONE WOLF

I have heard that odd things happen wherever this Ancient Stranger appears.

The men appraise Anasazi suspiciously.

LONE WOLF (CONT'D)

It is not the great spirit. It's the shaman's own sign, which he brings with him.

The men look back and forth between Anasazi and the bright star in the heavens.

ANASAZI

I am here for your son -

LONE WOLF

You fool -- I have no son!

Anasazi smiles.

ANASAZI

But you soon will. And it is his destiny to begin a long dynasty of peace makers.

INT. LONE WOLF'S CAVE - DAWN

On the sheer cliff just below where the men are standing is the entrance to Lone Wolf's cave.

Inside, Lone Wolf's wife, Little Deer, tosses and turns in her troubled sleep. The golden glow lights the entrance to the cave.

In the glow appears the translucent astral body of Anasazi's eagle. It floats gently toward Little Deer.

She becomes relaxed and receptive, as the eagle lands on her belly.

Her belly glows, and the eagle floats away.

EXT. CLIFF PEOPLE'S CAMP - DAWN

On the bluff above the cave, Anasazi continues his talk with Lone Wolf. His remarks are punctuated by the sharp CAWS of a CROW.

ANASAZI

Your son will be born at a rare, auspicious time, so the boy's power will be far greater than yours, Lone Wolf.

LONE WOLF

I don't begrudge him that. But why is his destiny any concern of yours?

ANASAZI

You will be the boy's first mentor.

LONE WOLF

First?

ANASAZI

For such a gifted apprentice, I will take over the boy's training myself.

LONE WOLF

When would that be?

ANASAZI

Not until you . . . finish as his first mentor.

LONE WOLF

If I'm the father, what makes you think I'll ever finish as his mentor?

The crow CAWS one last time, then plummets to the ground, stone dead, right at Lone Wolf's feet.

The men's faces show that they regard this as a very bad omen. Lone Wolf glares at Anasazi, but the elder looks past the shaman, and sees his eagle fly away. The bird goes unnoticed by the men, who still stare at the omen of death lying at Lone' Wolf's feet.

Anasazi disappears as suddenly as he appeared.

The men stare at Lone Wolf with a sense of foreboding. The shaman throws the dead crow over the cliff, and announces cynically:

LONE WOLF (CONT'D)

Like I said, odd things happen.

But he looks troubled as he climbs down the ladder to his cave.

INT. LONE WOLF'S CAVE - DAWN

Little Deer lies in bed, all aglow.

Lone Wolf enters. Little Deer closes her eyes, pretending to be asleep. He glowers at her.

LONE WOLF

Little Deer, wake up!

She slowly opens her eyes.

LONE WOLF (CONT'D)

Were you dreaming?

LITTLE DEER

Yes. I saw a beautiful golden light.

LONE WOLF

That's all?

LITTLE DEER

An eagle came.

Lone Wolf is shocked.

LONE WOLF

An eagle! Are you sure?

LITTLE DEER

Of course. Was it a sign?

LONE WOLF

[disturbed] Yes, of course it is! How do you feel?

LITTLE DEER

. . . Okay.

She looks a whole lot better than okay.

Lone Wolf looks even more troubled than before. He stares into the glowing red embers in his small fire. He stokes them, and sparks fly. Then yellow crackling flames burst into life.
